blessings upon His last prophet and messenger, Hazrat Mohammed (s.a.w.a.) and his purified Ahle Bait (a.s.) through whom Allah guided mankind. Allah, the Mighty invites us to Dua in the Quran through the verse, “And your Lord says, call upon Me, I will answer you; surely those that are too proud for My service shall soon enter Hell abused.” At another place, Allah, the Mighty says, “And when My servants ask you, concerning Me, then surely I am very near. I answer the prayer of the supplicant when he calls on Me.” These verses highlight two aspects. Firstly, Allah commands us to invoke Him through supplications. Secondly He has made it incumbent upon Himself to respond to that invocation. When it comes to the matter of supplication one can “communicate” with Allah in his own language and his own words. However, it is better to turn to Allah through the words of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) and the Infallible Imams (a.s.). Supplication is an integral part of the teachings of the Holy Prophet of Islam (s.a.w.a.) and the Ahle Bait (a.s.). Apart from the treasure of traditions, the Shiite school of thought is blessed by a rich trove of supplications from Ahle Bait (a.s.). These supplications, in themselves, are a guide to the fundamentals of faith (Usoole Deen) and the acts of faiths (Furue Deen). Through their supplications, the Ahle Bait (a.s.) taught us the true meaning of unity of Allah, the importance and position of Prophets and Imams, and instilled in us fear and hope for the day of Judgment. Supplications also guide mankind towards Allah through encouragement for doing good, avoiding evil and seeking the pleasure of Allah through high morals and ethics. It is therefore not surprising to find a high emphasis from Ahle Bait (a.s.) for turning towards Allah through the medium of supplications. They highlighted through their traditions the importance of supplications, the ways of seeking supplications, the most favored times and places for acceptance of supplications and benefits of the same. The Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) asked his companions, “Shall I introduce you to a weapon which will protect you from enemies and increase your sustenance?” They replied, “Yes, O Messenger of Allah.” He said, “Call your Lord day and night, for supplication is the weapon of the believer.” Imam Zainul Abedeen (as) says, “Supplication removes afflictions, those that have descended and those which have not yet descended.” In the last part of Dua-e-Kumayl by Ameerul Momeneen Ali Ibne Abi Talib (a.s.) we find the sentence, “Forgive the one whose owns nothing but supplication.” This sentence is an significant lesson for us and also sets the tone for the publication of this handy “Aamaal for Shabe Jumuah”. By grace of Allah, we have been bestowed supplications from the fourteen infallibles for all occasions, time, place, need etc. There is great emphasis on the place of supplication for the acceptance of duas. For example, the acceptance of dua is higher in mosques and places of worship like the shrine of Imam Husain (a.s.) and those of other Imams (a.s.). Imam Sadiq (a.s.) says “Allah has specified lands where Duas are accepted and the Holy Shrine of Imam Husain (a.s.) is one of them.” It is also recommended to recite supplication in congregation to increase the chances of its acceptance. In the same way, Imams (a.s.) have recommended special times when the supplications are accepted. For instance, at the time of Morning Prayer, at the time of namaze shab, on the day of Friday and on Thursday – the eve of Friday or Shabe Jumuah. Abu Abdillah, Imam Sadiq (a.s.) says, “The sun has not arisen on a day better than Friday. When the birds of the sky meet each other on this day, they greet themselves saying. ‘what a good day it is!’” Imam Baqir (a.s.), while emphasising the importance of Shabe Jumuah says, “Throughout this night, Allah calls out – is there any believing servant who calls upon Me until dawn so that I will grant his worldly and spiritual desires? – Is there any believing servant who repents from his sins before dawn so that I will forgive him? – Is there any believing servant whose sustenance is meager and asks Me to increase it before dawn so that I will increase it? – Is there any ailing, believing servant who asks Me before dawn to heal him so that I will cure him? – Is there any imprisoned servant who asks Me before dawn to free him so that I will free him from prison? – Is there any oppressed believing servant who asks Me before dawn to extract his right from an oppressor that that I will help him and restore his right?” When the children of Hazrat Yaqoob (a.s.) requested their father to seek forgiveness for them from Allah, Hazrat Yaqoob (a.s.) said, “I will seek forgiveness for you from my Lord.” In the tafseer of this verse, Imam Sadiq (a.s.) said that Hazrat Yaqoob (a.s.) delayed seeking forgiveness until the dawn on Shabe Jumuah. The above verse and tradition while highlighting the significance of this night for seeking forgiveness also draws attention to the importance of seeking the medium (waseelah or tawassul) of the prophet or Imam while seeking the forgiveness of Allah. There are several such incidents and traditions which underscore the value of Shabe Jumuah. Our scholars, quoting from traditions recommend three focal points to be kept in mind on this night – firstly one must remember death. Secondly, one must remember Imam Husain (a.s.) and the tragedies which befell him and his family. Thirdly, one must remember the Imam Mahdi, the Imam of the time (a.s.). There is a rationale for all of these. The remembrance of death inculcates in us a sense of humility; it makes us reflect on the temporary nature of this world and makes us turn towards Allah. The remembrance of Imam Husain (a.s.) instills in us hope and a spirit of sacrifice for Islam. Traditions remind us that every Thursday night, the prophets (a.s.) Imams (a.s.) and Hazrat Zahra (s.a.) are in Karbala; they salute him and mourn his tragedies. Therefore as the lovers of Imam Husain (a.s.), it is our duty that wherever we are in the world on Thursday night, we too must do the same. The remembrance of Imam Mahdi (a.s.) reminds us that every Thursday night our deeds are presented to him. He smiles when he sees our good actions and weeps at our sins and seeks forgiveness for us. It also makes us aware that Friday is the designated day of his reappearance. Therefore every Thursday night one should pray that this night is the last night of the occultation of the Imam and the dawn of Friday should bring us the glad news of his reappearance.
Dear brothers, our lives are short and death is a certainty! It is therefore important to make the best use of the opportunities that Allah provides so that we can redeem ourselves through supplication, turn toward Him in humility, seek our legitimate desires and acquire his pleasure through the expression of our poverty before Him. Shabe Jumuah is a bounty from Allah for us to achieve all of this and more.
Let us pray to Allah that He grants us the Tawfeeq to make best use of this bounty for as long as we live. Ameen

Although the recommended rites on Friday nights are too many, we will briefly mention some of them as follows

1) Repeat very often the following litanies

All Glory be to Allah. Allah is the Most Great. There is no god save Allah

Imam al-Sadiq(a.s.) is reported as saying, “To invoke Almighty Allah’s blessings upon Muhammad and his Household at Friday nights is equal to winning one thousand rewards, having one thousand evildoings erased, and having one thousand ranks raised

Shaykh al-Tusi says it recommended, on Thursdays, to repeat the invocations of blessings upon Muhammad and his Household one thousand times in the following form

O Allah, send blessings to Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad, hasten their Relief, and destroy their enemies from both jinn and human beings, both the foremost and the later ones

Shaykh al-Tusi has also recorded that it is recommended to say the following prayer of forgiveness at the last hour of Thursdays

I pray the forgiveness of Allah; there is no god but He,the Ever-living, the Self-Subsisting,and I repent to Him as a slave who is submissive, acquiescent, and poor, not controlling for himself any harm or profit,or benefit or damage and not controlling death nor life, nor raising (the dead) to life.May Allah send peace upon Muhammad and his Household; the pure, the immaculate, the choicest, and the pious;and may He spread thorough blessings over them

At Friday nights, it is recommended to recite the following chapters (Surah) of the Holy Qur’an

(1) Surah al-Isra’ (Bani-Isra’il; No. 17)
(2) Surah al-Kahf (No. 18)
(3) The three Surahs beginning with Ya-Sin, i.e. Surah al-Shu’ara’ (No. 26), Surah al-Naml (No. 27), and Surah al-Qasas (No. 28)
(4) Surah al-Sajdah (No. 32)
(5) Surah Yasin (No. 36)
(6) Surah Sad (No. 38)
(7) Surah al-Ahqaf (No. 46)
(8) Surah al-Waqiah (No. 56)
(9) Surah Fussilat (No. 41)
(10) Surah al-Dukhan (No. 44)
(11) Surah al-Tur (No. 52)
(12) Surah al-Qamar (No. 54)
(13) Surah al-Jumu’ah (No. 62)
If there is not enough time to recite all these Surahs, one may choose Surah al-Waqiah and those preceding it [in the aforesaid list].
Imam al-Sadiq (a.s.) is reported to have said that one who recites Surah al-Isra’ each Friday night will join Imam al-Mahdi(a.s.) as one of his companions.
He (a.s.) is also reported as saying that one who recites Surah al-Kahf at Friday nights will die as martyr and will be resurrected with and in the line of the martyrs (on the Resurrection Day).
He (a.s.) is also reported as saying that one who recites the three Surahs beginning with Ya-Sin at Friday nights will be included with the intimate saints of Almighty Allah, will be made in the vicinity and under the protection of Him, will never be inflicted with misery in his worldly life, and will be given beyond his pleasure on the Resurrection Day.
He (a.s.) is also reported as saying that one who recites Surah al-Sajdah at Friday nights will be given his Record of Deeds in his right hand, will not be interrogated about his evildoings, and will be included with the companions of Muhammad and his Household - peace be upon them all.
Imam Muhammad al-Baqir (a.s.) is authentically reported to have said that one who recites Surah Sad at Friday nights will be granted the welfare of this world as well as the Next World in such an excellent way that none would deserve except Prophets and archangels and will be allowed to Paradise as well as all those whom he loves among his household including the servants.
Imam Ja’far al-Sadiq(a.s.) is reported to have said that one who recites on Fridays or at Friday nights Surah al-Ahqaf will be saved, by Almighty Allah, from terrors in the worldly life and will be secured from the horror of the Resurrection Day.
He (a.s.) is also reported as saying that one who recites Surah al-Waqiah at Friday nights will be loved by Almighty Allah, all people will be made to love him, will be saved from all miseries, poverty, neediness, and misfortunes in this worldly life, and will be joined to the companions of Imam Ali Ameer al-Momineen(a.s.) because this Surah is ascribed to him.
It has been also narrated that to recite Surah al-Jumu’ah at Friday nights is decided as expiation (forgiving the sins) for the evildoings committed throughout the week. A similar merit has been narrated for reciting Surah al-Kahf at Friday nights or after the two obligatory Zohr and Asr Prayers on Fridays

The Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) is reported to have said that one who repeats the following supplicatory prayer seven times at Friday night will be allowed Paradise if he departs life at that night; and one who repeats it seven times on Friday will be also allowed Paradise if he departs life on that day

O Allah, You are my Lord; there is no god save You; You have created me, and I am Your slave and the son of Your bondmaid; and I am in Your grip; and my forehead is in Your Hand; I come to observe my covenant and promise to You as much as I can. I take refuge in Your pleasure against the evil of my deeds. I acknowledge Your favors and confess of my sins. So, (please) forgive my sins, for none can forgive sins save You

It is recommended to repeat the following supplicatory prayer ten times. This honorable supplicatory prayer is also recommended to be said at the night of ‘Id al-Fitr

O He Who is ever-Favorer on the beings!O He Who is openhandedly Bestower of gifts!O He Who is the Giver of sublime donations!Bless Muhammad and his Household, the best of all creatures in traits, and forgive us, O Lord of Highness, at this evening.

It is worth mentioning that it is highly recommended to offer many (mustahab / nafilah) prayers at Friday nights

1) Namaz Imam Ali AS also known as (Salat Ameer al-Momineen)

2) 2-unit prayer in each of which one should recite Surah al-Faatehah once and repeat Surah al-Zalzalah (No. 99) fifteen times.
It has been narrated that one who offers this prayer will be saved, by Almighty Allah, from the grave torment and the horrors on the Resurrection Day

3) It is recommended to recite Surah al-Jumu’ah (No. 62) in the first unit of the Maghrib (Sunset) and Isha’ (Evening) obligatory Prayers, and to recite Surah al-Tawheed (No. 112) in the second unit of the Maghrib Prayer and Surah al-A’la (No. 87) in the second unit of the Isha’ Prayer

4) It is highly recommended to pray Almighty Allah for the good of one’s brethren-in-faith very frequently so as to copy the deed of Lady Fatimah al-Zahra’. According to a Hadith, one who prays for ten deceased individuals will be unquestionably allowed to enter Paradise

5) Imam Ja’far al-Sadiq(a.s.) is authentically reported as saying that one who says the following dua in the last prostration of the Isha’ supererogatory (mustahab / nafilah) prayer at Friday nights and repeats it seven times will have all his sins forgiven as soon as he accomplishes that prayer. Yet, it is desirable to repeat this deed each night

O Allah, I beseech You in the name of Your Noble Face and in the name of Your Sublime Name to send blessings to Muhammad and his Household and to forgive me my grave sin

6) Prayer of Imam Mahdi (peace be upon him) on Night of Friday Quoting the book of Kunuz al-Najah by Shaykh al-Yabrisi, the author of al-Najm al-Thaqib mentioned the following statement to have come from Imam al-Mahdi (peace be upon him) : “Whoever has a request to be urgently granted by Almighty Allah, may bathe himself after midnight at a Friday night, directs towards his place of prayer, and offers a two unit prayer. In the first unit, he may recite Surah al-Faatehah, but when he reaches this holy verse, he should repeat it one hundred times:

He may then continue reciting this Surah. After that, he may recite Surah al-Tawheed one time only. In the genuflection of each unit, he may repeat the following seven times:

In the two prostrations of each unit, he may repeat the following seven times:

Then, you may prostrate yourself, submit your request, and beseech Almighty Allah earnestly and purely. Verily, if any believing man or woman offers this prayer and says this supplicatory prayer, the doors to the heavens will be opened before him/her so that his/her requests will be granted and his/her prayer will be immediately responded, no matter what his/her prayer may be. This is one of the favors Almighty Allah has bestowed upon people and upon us."

7) Salat Jaffer Tyyar

Shaykh al-Tusi, Sayyid Ibn Tawus, al-Kaf`ami, and Sayyid Ibn Baqi have recorded that it is recommended to say the following prayer on Fridays and at Friday nights and on the day and night of `Arafat (the ninth of Dhu’l-Hijjah).The supplication below is as quoted from Shaykh al-Tusi’s book of al-Misbah:

O Allah, One may call up, prepare, ready oneself, and stand prepared for purpose of coming to a creature in the hope of gaining his aid and asking for his gift and present. As for myself, to You—O my Lord—I make my preparations and readiness hoping for Your pardon and asking for Your gift and present. So, (please) do not disappoint my entreaty. O He Who never disappoints His beseechers and Whose prizes never decrease His ample-giving! I have not come to You with confidence of a righteous deed that I have done nor have I had any hope in a grant of any creature. Rather, I have come to You professing myself to be evildoer and transgressor and confessing that I lack any pretext or excuse. I have come to You hoping for Your great pardon due to which You have pardoned the wrongdoers. Hence, their long-lasting retirement to their grave offenses has not prevented You from turning to them with mercy. O He Whose mercy is huge and Whose pardon is great; O All-great, O All-great, O All-great; nothing can repel Your rage except Your forbearance and nothing can save from Your wrath except imploring earnestly to You. So, my God, (please) grant me a relief in the name of the power through which You restore to life the derelict lands, and do not cause me to perish out of grief until You respond to me and show me signs of Your response to my prayers. (please) Make me taste the flavor of wellbeing up to the end of my lifetime, do not make my enemies gloat over me, do not give them a hand over me, and do not make them control over me. O Allah, If You humiliate me, who can then exalt me? And if You exalt me, who can then humiliate me? If You annihilate me, who can then interfere before You concerning the affair of me—Your slave or who can intercede to ask You about it? I have already known for sure that Your decrees are devoid of injustice and Your punishment does not count on immediateness. Verily, immediateness is the work of him who fears lest he may miss, and only do the weak need injustice. As for You, O my God, You are too exalted to be so—Exalted and Great You are beyond all measure! O Allah, I take refuge in You; so, (please) have protection upon me! I call for Your safekeeping; so, (please) keep me under Your security! I appeal for Your sustenance; so, (please) provide me with sustenance! I put trust in You; so, (please) keep me under Your supervision! I call for Your aid against my enemy; so, (please) grant me support! I seek Your assistance; so, (please) assist me! I ask for Your forgiveness; so, (please) forgive me. So, respond! Respond! Respond!
